An incredible nine Speed River and University of Guelph athletes have qualified for the 32 person selection pool for the 2011 North American, Central American and the Caribbean (NACAC) Championships and also for the World Cross Country Championships. Leading the way is over 50% of the senior men's team led by runner-up Rob Watson and bronze medalist Reid Coolsaet. Watson and Coolsaet are joined by Alex Genest and Derek Snider in the selection pool. It is unlikely that Watson will be able to compete at either of the championships as he will be making his marathon debut January 30th in Houston, Texas. Canadian Junior Champion Ross Proudfoot is the lone junior male representative, he is joined by two athletes who are in the pool for the junior women's team in Emily Driedger and Carise Thompson. All three are freshman at the University of Guelph. Rounding out the impressive list of Speed River/University of Guelph athletes in the pool are steeplechasers Dana Buchanan and Genevieve Lalonde, who finished fourth and eighth resepctively in the senior women's race. The NACAC Championships will be hosted February 19th in Tobago, with the World Championships set for March 20th in Punta Umbria, Spain. More news |
