ATHLETICS CANADA REVEALS 2022 CANADIAN CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES

Athletics Canada is pleased to reveal its Canadian Championship Series of 2022: its most comprehensive since 2019.

The Series will comprise ten events, span five provinces, and crown champions in disciplines ranging from the 100m to the Marathon that will allow participants to compete on the Track, Field, Road, and Trail.

“After a couple of years of cancellations, postponements and disruption due to the COVID-19 pandemic we are thrilled to announce our 2022 Canadian Championships Series,” said Athletics Canada interim Chief Executive Officer Mathieu Gentès.

“The Championship Series provides Canadian athletes, from recreational to elite, the opportunity to compete against the very best in iconic venues and locations across Canada.”

Gentès said that, with the improvement of the COVID-19 situation, Athletics Canada hopes to welcome spectators to all Championships where people will be able to watch National Champions crowned. Additionally, Athletics Canada’s ongoing partnership with RunnerSpace.com will see many of these events broadcast live on AthleticsCanada.TV.

Some of the championships will once again take place in their longstanding venues. The 10k road championships returns to Ottawa for the sixth time in its history but for the first time since 2019. The nation’s capital will also welcome the Canadian cross-country championship for the second consecutive fall. The Canadian Marathon Championship, meanwhile, returns to Toronto but with a new look and sponsor – Tata Consultancy Services – that has already pledged to bolster the event with substantial technological upgrades like a sophisticated tracking app and an improved virtual racing option.

“We’ve all been patient, and are just so excited to welcome our participants back,” said Charlotte Brookes, national event director of Canada Running Series, the organization behind the Toronto Waterfront Marathon.

“Having world-class in-person and virtual options is an added way of reaching out to the new wave of runners that the pandemic created.”

Other venues will act as first-time hosts for major finals. The 2022 indoor championships will be the first national final ever contested at the new Irving Oil Fieldhouse in Saint John, N.B. in March, and the Township of Langley, B.C. will welcome the 2022 Canadian National Track and Field Championship for the first time in its history three months later.

“There is a lot of preparation needed to host an event of this calibre,” said Township of Langley Mayor Jack Froese. “As those preparations continue, excitement is growing across our community as we await the arrival of the many premier athletes from across the country who will be competing in the 2022 Canadian Track & Field Championships.”
